Renewal: extend housing benefit in Frankfurt in time

As of: August 2026

A renewal application extends housing benefit (Wohngeld) in Frankfurt before the award period ends. Typically submit it about two months before the end date shown on the decision notice. The authority reassesses eligibility and amount; old notices alone are not enough. If the application arrives only after the period has ended, a gap can arise because housing benefit usually takes effect only from the new month of application.

Why a new application is needed before the period ends

Housing benefit is not paid indefinitely. The decision notice states the award period – usually twelve months, and up to 24 months in comparatively stable circumstances. On the last day of that period the benefit ends if no new application is on file.

The housing benefit application for renewal is therefore not a mere extension stamp. The Housing Office (Amt für Wohnungswesen) checks again whether the conditions of the Housing Benefit Act (Wohngeldgesetz, WoGG) are met and what amount follows from the current rent, current income and current household size.

When should the renewal application be submitted?

As a guide: about two months before the award ends. That leaves time for follow-up requests without the award breaking off. The exact end date is on the decision notice, not in a reminder from a third party.

If the renewal application arrives only in the month after the period ends, a new award usually takes effect only from that new month of application. The time in between is without housing benefit. If you are unsure whether an award is still running, check the last decision notice or ask the office.

What does the authority reassess?

What matters are the current household members, income and the countable gross cold rent or housing burden. Frankfurt remains in Mietenstufe VI; the maximum amounts (615 / 745 / 887 / 1,035 / 1,183 euros, plus 149 euros for each further member) continue to apply for the new period.

If the situation has changed since the last notice – a rent increase, a job change, a separation or another child – that enters the new calculation. In parallel, duties to notify may still apply for the period that is still running.

Which documents are needed again?

Current income and rent evidence must be submitted again, because the authority determines the claim afresh. An old award notice does not replace these documents. Identity documents and, where relevant, a residence title also belong with the application.

The checklist under Documents applies in the same way to a renewal. Self-employed people update profit figures; pensioners update the current pension notice. For an owner subsidy, current evidence of the housing burden is needed.

Online, paper and competence

In many cases you can submit the renewal application as an online application. That does not change local competence: for dwellings in Frankfurt am Main the Housing Office remains responsible.

What if something changes before the period ends?

Not every change waits for the renewal. If the rent or the number of countable people rises, an increase application may already be relevant during the current period. Other changes belong in the change application – in Frankfurt often still on paper.

A move within the city or across the city boundary can shift competence and the countable rent. If transfer benefits such as Bürgergeld begin, the housing-benefit claim usually ends. Do not wait until the renewal to report such events.

After the new award

The new decision notice sets the amount and period again. The benefit can rise, fall or end if income crosses the threshold. Check the information on legal remedies and the end of the award so the next renewal application is again in time.

If the renewal is refused, the same routes apply as for a first application: the Refusal page and, where appropriate, an appeal in writing within one month.
