Documents for the housing benefit application in Frankfurt

As of: August 2026

A housing benefit (Wohngeld) application in Frankfurt includes, besides the application form, evidence of the dwelling, the income of all household members and identity. Which documents are needed depends on whether you rent, sublet or occupy your own property, and on your residence status. Incomplete documents delay the housing-benefit authority’s decision.

Why the checklist matters

The Housing Office (Amt für Wohnungswesen) assesses the claim only on the evidence submitted. A complete set of documents therefore belongs with the application – for a first application as for a renewal.

Submit copies and keep originals ready if they are requested. The list below follows usual Frankfurt practice; in an individual case the authority can ask for further evidence.

What almost every household submits

Regardless of the form of housing, that includes identity documents, income evidence and – for rent – the contract plus payment receipts. Details of countable income are under Income, and of the boundary with other benefits under Transfer benefits.

Questions about the documents

The application should be submitted as complete as possible. The authority requests missing evidence later; that lengthens processing. Gather the documents before you send the application.

Yes, if the rent payment is clearly identifiable. Alternatively the authority usually accepts a current rent certificate.

Subtenancy agreement, head tenancy agreement, payment evidence and a floor-plan sketch. Details are in the checklist above and under Subtenants.

Non-EU nationals submit a valid residence title. Whether you qualify also depends on residence status – see Residence and newcomers.

Current income and rent evidence is needed again, because the authority reassesses the claim. Old notices alone are not enough.

To the Housing Office (Amt für Wohnungswesen), Adickesallee 67–69, 60322 Frankfurt am Main. They can be submitted with the application.
