Housing benefit and unemployment benefit in Frankfurt
As of: August 2026
Yes, unemployment benefit under Book III of the Social Code can in principle be combined with housing benefit (Wohngeld) in Frankfurt. Unemployment benefit counts as income. Bürgergeld with housing costs included, by contrast, usually excludes housing benefit. After unemployment benefit ends the situation often changes; then it must be examined afresh which benefit takes priority.
Unemployment benefit I and the expensive Frankfurt rent
Unemployment benefit replaces part of the last net wage, not the Frankfurt rent. In Mietenstufe VI the maximum for one person is 615 euros, for two people 745 euros. Many former full-time workers pay a gross cold rent above that or just below. Unemployment benefit I alone often does not carry this rent – but lies above Bürgergeld.
That is exactly why the combination of unemployment benefit and housing benefit is a frequent case. What lies above the maximum stays uncounted. System: Amount, Eligibility. The boundary with Bürgergeld: Bürgergeld.
Unemployment benefit I counts, Bürgergeld usually excludes
Unemployment benefit under Book III of the Social Code is an insurance benefit without embedded housing costs. It flows into income; housing benefit can sit beside it. Short-time working benefit and transitional allowance are to be examined similarly. Bürgergeld under Book II of the Social Code, by contrast, typically includes housing costs – then there is an exclusion.
If unemployment benefit ends and Bürgergeld begins, housing benefit usually falls away. Conversely, housing benefit can take priority if it avoids the need for assistance. The transitions belong to the duty to notify. Overview: Transfer benefits.
Which documents are typically needed for unemployment benefit
Besides the tenancy agreement, rent payments and identification the authority needs the current notice of the employment agency on unemployment benefit plus evidence of further receipts – for example remaining salary, a severance payment or maintenance. The filterable list is under Documents.
The Housing Office (Amt für Wohnungswesen), Adickesallee 67–69, 60322 Frankfurt am Main, receives the application. If unemployment benefit I ends, report that before the type of benefit changes.
Example: a one-person household with unemployment benefit
Example for orientation, not a decision notice: a person living alone in Bornheim receives unemployment benefit and pays 710 euros gross cold rent. The maximum for level VI for one person is 615 euros. At most 615 euros therefore enter the calculation; 95 euros stay uncounted. Income consists of unemployment benefit under Book III of the Social Code, without Bürgergeld.
Whether housing benefit is paid depends on the countable ALG I amount – a euro amount is named only in the decision notice. Further situations: Employees, Bürgergeld, audiences. Next: Application, Documents, Amount, Eligibility.
