Apply for housing benefit in Frankfurt online
As of: August 2026
You can apply for housing benefit (Wohngeld) online in Frankfurt for a first application, a renewal application and an increase application. The change application often still runs on paper at the Housing Office (Amt für Wohnungswesen). The electronic route changes neither competence nor the statutory conditions: the same evidence, the same effect from the month of application and the same assessment under the Housing Benefit Act apply.
Which applications are possible online?
In practice the electronic route is intended for the first application, the renewal application and the increase application. These three paths cover a first award, an extension before the period ends, and a top-up if the rent rises or more household members join.
The change application – for example on a move, a separation or other ongoing changes – is in Frankfurt often still submitted in writing on paper. If you only know the online route, do not leave changes undone. An overview of all types is in the housing benefit application.
What the online route requires
You need stable details of the dwelling, household and income, plus the evidence in a readable form, usually as files. Identification, the tenancy agreement or ownership documents, payment receipts and income evidence for all household members belong with it. The checklist is under Documents.
Technical access (user account, authentication) does not replace completeness of content. Unclear scans, cropped bank statements or missing pages of the tenancy agreement lead to the same follow-up requests as on paper. An online application is not a shortened procedure, but the same application in another form.
Effect, maximum amounts and assessment
Online the same rule applies: awarded housing benefit usually takes effect from the month of receipt by the competent authority. Frankfurt am Main remains assigned to Mietenstufe VI. The maximum amounts of countable rent are 615 euros (one person), 745 euros (two), 887 euros (three), 1,035 euros (four) and 1,183 euros (five); 149 euros for each further member.
The calculation follows the Housing Benefit Act (Wohngeldgesetz, WoGG) and the Housing Benefit Ordinance (Wohngeldverordnung, WoGV). Whether a rent subsidy or an owner subsidy fits depends on the form of housing, not on the transmission channel.
Change applications often still on paper
Changes during a current award – a move, a household change, a noticeable income change, the start of transfer benefits – belong in a change application or under the duty to notify. In Frankfurt written form on paper is often required for that.
After sending
Keep the confirmation of receipt and a copy of the details. Follow-up requests from the authority apply regardless of the channel. The later decision notice arrives in writing and contains the amount, the award period and the information on legal remedies.
The award period is usually twelve months. Before it ends, submit the renewal application – often again online – about two months beforehand. If the application is refused, refusal and an appeal (one month, in writing; email is not enough) are the next steps.
Competence remains local
Online does not change competence. For dwellings in Frankfurt am Main the Housing Office decides. Anyone who after a move lives outside the city must apply to the then competent office.
Whether Sachsenhausen, Höchst or Kalbach: across the whole city the same authority and the same rent level apply. A guide by area is under Districts. Complementary offers after an award are the Frankfurt-Pass and Hessenpass mobil.
Completeness and care
False or incomplete details can lead to refusal, revocation or repayment. That applies online as on paper. All household members and all income must be stated; the authority assesses allowances from the evidence, not from a self-declaration alone.
If you are unsure whether online or paper is the right channel, go by the application type: first, renewal and increase often electronic; a change in Frankfurt often paper. On the substance the same eligibility rules apply.
