The housing benefit decision notice in Frankfurt
As of: August 2026
The housing benefit (Wohngeld) decision notice is the Housing Office’s written decision on your application. If the claim is awarded, it states the amount, the award period – usually twelve months, up to 24 months – and notes on the duty to notify. If it is refused, the operative part and reasons state why there is no claim. The information on legal remedies starts the one-month period for an appeal.
What the decision notice contains
An award notice names the person entitled, the household, the type of benefit (rent subsidy or owner subsidy), the monthly amount, the award period and usually the payment route. It rests on the details in the application and the evidence examined.
You will also find notes on the duty to notify and the information on legal remedies. Read both in full. Figures alone do not show whether rent, income and household size were counted as you stated them.
How long does the award last?
The award period is usually twelve months and typically starts with the month of application. In comparatively constant income and housing circumstances it can last up to 24 months. The exact start and end dates are on the decision notice, not in a general rule alone.
When the period ends, payment stops if no renewal application is on file in time. As a guide, about two months before the end. There is no automatic extension.
Amount and what determines it
The amount shown on the decision notice follows the statutory calculation from countable rent or housing burden, income and the number of countable people. Frankfurt am Main is in Mietenstufe VI. The maximum amounts of gross cold rent are 615, 745, 887, 1,035 and 1,183 euros (one to five people) plus 149 euros for each further member.
If the actual rent is higher, that is not by itself a ground of appeal – the excess is left out of the calculation. The pages Amount and Wohngeld-Plus help place the figures.
Conditions during the award
An award creates duties. You must report changes of more than 15 per cent in income or rent, changes in household size, a move and the start of transfer benefits. Breaches can lead to revocation and repayment.
A higher rent or more household members can justify an increase application. Other changes run through the change application, in Frankfurt often on paper. The decision notice does not replace these reports.
If the decision notice refuses the claim
A refusal notice is also an administrative act. It must state the reason – for example income that is too high, exclusion because of transfer benefits, lack of entitlement to apply, or insufficient evidence. The Refusal page places typical reasons in context.
Against the notice you can lodge an appeal in writing within one month of notification. Email is not enough. In parallel a complete new application can make sense if the facts have changed or evidence is being supplied later.
What you should check after you receive it
Do the start of the award, the number of household members, the countable rent and the income taken into account match? If a person or an allowance is missing, the amount can be wrong. Allowances for single parents or people with disabilities must appear in the calculation if the conditions are met.
- Note the award period and end date for the renewal
- Compare the amount with rent, income and household size
- Note the information on legal remedies and the deadline
- Observe the duty to notify during the current award
What can follow an award
Recipients of housing benefit can, under the respective rules, use the Frankfurt-Pass and Hessenpass mobil. That does not change the housing-benefit notice itself, but can open further relief.
If the dwelling changes, check competence. Within Frankfurt the same office remains responsible, and Mietenstufe VI continues to apply – regardless of district.
