Housing benefit for trainees in Frankfurt

As of: August 2026

Trainees can receive housing benefit (Wohngeld) in Frankfurt if they are not entitled to vocational training allowance (BAB) in principle or if they live with household members who do not fall under the same exclusion. Trainees living alone with BAB-eligible training are often excluded – even without BAB paid out. If they live with their parents, the household as a whole can be examinable. Training pay counts as income.

Training pay and Frankfurt rent

Training pay often lies clearly below a full-time wage; rents in Frankfurt lie in Mietenstufe VI. A room rented alone or a small flat can reach the maximum of 615 euros for one person. Even so the same filter as for students stands at the start: the statutory competition with training support.

Anyone who passes the filter is examined by pay, household size and gross cold rent. The parallel rule for study is under Students and BAföG. In general: Eligibility, Amount.

BAB in principle – analogous to BAföG

There is no housing-benefit claim if all household members are or would be entitled to vocational training allowance or training allowance under Book III of the Social Code in principle. That also applies if nothing is paid in amount. Exception: the benefit would be provided solely as a loan. Many in-company trainings are BAB-eligible as soon as the trainee no longer lives in the parents’ household.

If trainees live with their parents or with an employed partner, not all household members are eligible for support in principle. Then the household can have housing benefit examined; training pay flows in as income. Training that BAB does not cover also falls out of the exclusion.

Which documents trainees typically submit

Besides the tenancy agreement or details of the parents’ dwelling, rent payments and identification the authority needs the training contract, evidence of training pay and – if available – the BAB notice or the reason why there is no claim in principle. Income of all household members belongs with it. The list is under Documents.

The Housing Office (Amt für Wohnungswesen), Adickesallee 67–69, 60322 Frankfurt am Main, receives the application. The place of the dwelling is responsible.

Example: a trainee in a parent’s household

Example for orientation, not a decision notice: a trainee lives with a parent and a younger sibling in Höchst. The gross cold rent is 910 euros. The maximum for level VI for three people is 887 euros. At most 887 euros therefore enter the calculation; 23 euros stay uncounted. Income consists of the parent’s salary and the training pay.

Because not all household members are entitled to BAB in principle, the exclusion does not apply automatically. A euro amount is named only in the decision notice. Further situations: Students, Families, BAföG. Next: Application, Documents, Amount, Eligibility.

Frequently asked questions

If the training is BAB-eligible in principle, the exclusion often remains – even without a payout. Whether your training is eligible is examined by the employment agency; the housing-benefit authority takes over the result.

Yes. It flows into annual income, with the statutory deductions insofar as tax or social insurance arises.

The parents are usually not entitled to BAB in principle. The household can therefore be examinable. Your pay counts as household income.

School-based training can fall under BAföG instead of BAB. Then the parallel rule for students applies. What matters is eligibility in principle.

As long as all household members are entitled to BAB in principle, housing benefit falls away. In a mixed household BAB paid out can count as income at half, analogous to BAföG grants.

With the end of training the BAB exclusion falls away. The new salary is income; a job change can open or change the claim again.
